This photo was taken from a visit to the columbariums at Barrancas Nat'l Cemetery, where dads remains will be laid to rest later in the month.
My Dad was 68 years old. On July 6th, 2011, lung cancer ended his life. He was a tough dude. A tattoo-clad man's man, who liked to fish, liked whiskey, women and wine but wasn't overindulgent in any of them. Taking chemo and radiation he usually drove himself for the 170 mile round trip to the VA Hospital in Biloxi.
I cared for him in my home for his final weeks and he expressed to me that he'd lived a good life and felt he'd done right by others. In his life, I've seen dad fire a gun at a threatening thug and I've seen him on all fours kissing my babies' toes and speaking baby talk. The right balance of tough and soft to make a person real.
Dad taught me to be a great provider for my family. He taught me virtues like loyalty, hard work and ambition. In a recent hospital visit when it became aware that his lung cancer was "back" and facing his own mortality, dad mustered enough strength to stand on his feet and face the Dr. and ask "If I work hard at the physical therapy, can you help me get my strength back so that I can continue to care for Margaret?" Margaret is my 60 year old mother who died 3 weeks later from smoker-related diseases.
